Vienna’s city center woke up in a white winter dress on Saturday. During the night, a low-pressure area caused a decent snowfall.

Low-pressure area “Khang,” in connection with a northerly flow, provides snowfall over the weekend, especially along the northern Alps. In the night to Saturday, even the previously snowless federal capital was affected; the Viennese awoke under a delicate winter dress.

The reason for this is a pronounced low-pressure complex over Central and Southern Europe, which determines the weather in the Alpine region. In addition, a small-scale low pressure passes east of Austria towards Poland at the weekend, which brings us snowfall down to the lowlands.

The meteorologists of the Severe Weather Center UWZ have issued related warnings. Warning level red is currently valid regionally in parts of the Mostviertel (Lower Austria) and the Salzkammergut area. There is a severe weather warning along the entire Northern Alps as well as in the Waldviertel and Mühlviertel regions:

In this regard, UWZ writes: “The information along the Northern Alps is valid primarily until Sunday morning, those in the direction of the Vienna Woods until the night of Sunday. The warnings in the Waldviertel and Mühlviertel are valid for Saturday, and the warnings in the western outskirts of Vienna for the night to Saturday and until Saturday morning.

On Saturday, it will snow again and again, especially on the northern side of the Alps; most fresh snow will fall from the north of Tyrolean Limestone Alps to the Mariazellerland. Also, a few snow showers will pass in the east, and the sun will occasionally show up in East Tyrol and Carinthia with a northern foehn. The wind will blow briskly to enormously from the northwest; on the main ridge and eastern edge of the Alps, gale-force winds will be present. The highs will range between -4 and +3 degrees from northwest to southeast.

Sunday will start in the north and west with some snowfall; in the morning, it will largely subside. The sun will appear in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia from time to time, but it will remain cloudy and snowing during the day, especially in the eastern half. The wind will temporarily decrease and blow briskly from west to northwest, most likely in the Danube region. A maximum of -4 to +2 degrees will be reached
