Some scientists have changed their minds about coffee.
While until today, coffee was a drink not recommended for people with high blood pressure, now the opinion is changing completely. According to an Italian study conducted by the University of Bologna and the IRCCS Hospital-University Company Bologna – Polyclinic Sant’Orsola, coffee would help keep blood pressure low.
How the research was conducted
The researchers took a sample of 720 men and 783 women, all of Italian nationality. For each individual, they looked at various factors, such as blood pressure, coffee consumption habits, and a range of other clinical data.
What were the results of the coffee research?
The study’s first author, Arrigo Cicero, a professor at the Faculty of Medical and Surgical Sciences of the University of Bologna, confirmed that those who regularly drink coffee have lower peripheral mean blood pressure. Such effects were also found on central aortic pressure near the heart for the first time.
The positive factor is not caffeine.
What is good for blood pressure is not caffeine; therefore, it seems that the effect of decaffeinated coffee on blood pressure is the same as for regular coffee. Caffeine is not the only thing that plays an active role in the biochemistry of coffee with other substances that act as antidotes.
