The median income in Austria is 50,633 euros gross per year (up 8.9% from 2022), according to the new salary report from recruiter Stepstone. This is the “median,” which means 50% are above and 50% below this value. More than 40,000 data points were analyzed for this purpose.
The disadvantages faced by women were also surveyed. Assuming the same conditions (educational qualifications, professional experience, etc.), the “gender gap” is around 6,000 euros per year. Only full-time employees were surveyed, so it is comparable.
From a regional point of view, one can earn the best in Vienna, followed by Vorarlberg and Salzburg. Corporations pay better than smaller companies. Managers make 25% more on average. Education also pays off: Those who have successfully studied receive 33% more on average.
Of course, professional experience also plays a role. The median starting salary is €40,833 per year. Those with the company for over 25 years can expect a median income of €60,667. Bonuses and commissions are included.
According to Stepstone, the best-paying industry is pharmaceuticals (€66,547). Aerospace, the oil industry and banks follow this. At the bottom end, one finds tourism and agencies (chart). According to the survey, 60% are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their salary, compared with 53% a year ago. As few as 4.7% say they are “very sad about their current income.
