Autumn is making its way into Austria. While the temperatures in the afternoon, thanks to Föhn, rose to a pleasant 20 degrees, Wednesday began cold and frosty in many places. Schwarzau im Freiwald (Lower Austria) experienced a bitterly cold minus 6.5 degrees. But also in the big cities, it was freezing in the morning: in Salzburg, even minus temperatures were measured for the first time this autumn.
It will get warmer again.
Some clouds will move through in the west and southwest on Wednesday, but there will be sunny spells in between. In the eastern half, the day will be sunny in many areas. Only thin, high clouds will dampen the sunshine somewhat, and there will be a few patches of early morning fog regionally. In the eastern region, a moderate to brisk southeasterly wind will blow. On the northern side of the Alps, the southerly foehn will reach the valleys in the afternoon—early temperatures minus 2 to plus 8 degrees, daily highs 10 to 17 degrees.
A foehny weather situation will build up on Thursday. Some clouds will accumulate in the southwest, and local rain showers are possible. Along the main ridge of the Alps and from Vorarlberg to the Salzkammergut, there will be sunny spells in addition to many clouds. Further east, the sunny weather character will predominate with a few cloud fields. The wind will blow from the Föhn areas in the west to the central Burgenland, partly briskly from east to south, otherwise mainly weak to moderate—early temperatures around 1 to 10 degrees, and daytime highs much milder at 13 to 21 degrees.
