There’s a good reason why you shouldn’t do the dishes today. According to an old superstition, doing such chores on January 1st brings bad luck. If there is any truth to this, it is, of course, best to wait until January 2. Otherwise, it should have been done yesterday, as Nyheder24.dk reports.

Several superstitions, myths, and old stories suggest that any form of cleaning or tidying up should be avoided on January 1.

One belief states that doing laundry on the first day of the year will ‘wash away’ a loved one, meaning you could potentially lose a friend or family member today.

Another warns that washing clothes or dishes on January 1 will simply ‘wash away your luck’. The same goes for sweeping or vacuuming your floors, as it is also believed to ‘sweep away luck and happiness’.

In addition, emptying your garbage cans and throwing out your bin bag can also bring bad luck, so it is advisable to refrain from doing so.

It is claimed that removing things from your home can lead to the disappearance of wealth. There’s also an old myth that what you do on the first day of the year reflects the rest of your year.

So, if you decide to spend January 1 cleaning and doing the dishes, you can expect the remaining 364 days of the year to be filled with hard and boring work, which is undoubtedly undesirable.
