Car Registration certificate is now also digitally on the smartphone

After obtaining your driver’s license, saving your registration certificate digitally on your smartphone is now possible. This means traffic checks can now be carried out entirely via cell phone. The prerequisite is ID Austria.
The population has digitally activated 560,000 driving licenses, said State Secretary for Digitalization Florian Tursky (ÖVP) at the presentation of the new function together with Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) at the Rossauer Kaserne in Vienna.

Now that the registration certificate can also be stored in the “eAusweise” app on the smartphone, traffic checks can be carried out completely digitally. The registration data of several vehicles can also be saved. A QR code must be generated in the app during a traffic check, which the police officer checks.

Apps: “Digitales Amt” and “eAusweise”
The prerequisite for using the “eAusweise” app is the ID Austria with the associated “Digitales Amt” app.

Only registration certificates issued to yourself can be added to the app. If the car is registered to your spouse, for example, or if you borrow the car from a relative, you still have to carry the physical registration certificate in cheque card or paper format. However, this is set to change soon, and company cars will also be able to be passed on with authorization in the course of the year.

At present, cell phone ID cards are only valid in Austria. By 2026, all EU countries will be able to accept digital ID cards in accordance with the common European standard. Austrians with ID Austria can then show their driver’s license, for example, or carry out official procedures digitally throughout the EU.
