Washers are a basic element of personal hygiene in many bathrooms. But the cleanliness of these clothes is crucial for skin health. According to dermatologist Nina Roos in an interview with Femme Actuelle, proper and regular cleaning of washers is essential.
Washers often hang in the shower or lie on the bathroom floor and can become breeding grounds for bacteria due to their damp and warm conditions.

Roos warns: “The risk with all these items is skin infection.” To ensure effective and safe cleaning, she recommends washing washers every 3 to 4 days with daily use or at least once a week.

Roos suggests washing washers in the machine at 60°C to remove dirt and grease stains for cleaning.

She also emphasizes the importance of drying, as remaining moisture can encourage bacterial growth. Flat-air drying is advisable if a drying rack or a towel warmer is used for quick and effective drying. She advises using 2 to 3 identical models in rotation and always having a clean washcloth to hand.

On the softness of washers: Frequent washing can make them rougher. To counteract this, home textiles brand Carré Blanc recommends several techniques, such as drying bathroom linen on a towel warmer to preserve softness, using less detergent, or replacing fabric softener with white vinegar or lemon juice to dissolve limescale.
Finally, Roos advises against using washers on sensitive skin, as they irritate it. She reminds those who use them to hydrate their skin after showering.
