After a sunny and warm start to the week, it will remain summery throughout Austria in the coming days. The expected temperatures of around 30 degrees are in line with the season. However, the likelihood of rain will increase from the middle of the week. The meteorologists at Geosphere Austria (formerly the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics, ZAMG) also forecast an increased tendency for thunderstorms in the second half of the week.
According to the forecast, it will be mostly sunny on Tuesday. A few clouds are most likely in the south of the country. During the course of the day, some higher-altitude cumulus clouds will develop in the western half of Austria. As a result, thunderstorms are also to be expected – especially in the west and southwest. Towards the east, however, the chance of rain will remain low with a mix of sun and clouds. The wind will blow weakly to moderately in the western Danube Valley and briskly from predominantly easterly directions. It will be eleven to 17 degrees in the morning and 22 to 29 degrees during the day.
Rain and thunderstorms
In the middle of the week, a low-pressure system in high air layers over the Upper Adriatic will cause weak disturbances in Austria. After a sunny day, the first cumulus clouds will soon form in warm and humid air, bringing widespread rain showers and thunderstorms until the evening, especially from Upper Austria eastwards, on the eastern edge of the Alps, and in south-eastern Styria. The wind will blow weakly to moderately from east to south. Early temperatures will be between 12 and 18 degrees, with daytime highs of 24 to 28 degrees.
On Thursday, the weather-determining low-pressure system will only slowly move southeastwards in high layers of air and will still bring hot and humid weather and a high tendency for showers and thunderstorms in many regions of Austria. The wind will only be light. The thermometer will show 13 to 20 degrees in the morning and 24 to 29 degrees during the day.
For Friday, the last day of school in the federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland, the rising air pressure will bring mostly sunny and midsummer weather to large parts of the country. According to the forecast, local rain showers are only possible in the afternoon over the mountains in the country’s eastern half. The wind will be mostly light. Temperatures in the morning will be between 13 and 20 degrees, reaching 26 to 30 degrees during the day.
Hot weekend
From today’s perspective, even higher temperatures are expected for the weekend. According to the private weather service Ubimet, it will be 31 degrees in large parts of Austria on Saturday. In the eastern federal states, the probability of rain is less than five percent. Only in Salzburg (30 percent), Tyrol (40 percent) and Vorarlberg (95 percent) is it higher. In the latter state, temperatures will still reach 28 degrees. In Vienna and Burgenland, tropical nights are also to be expected, meaning that temperatures will not fall below 20 degrees at night.
It will remain hot on Sunday with temperatures of up to 32 degrees but with a much higher chance of rain throughout the country. Only in Salzburg, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg will temperatures not exceed 25 degrees.
