Aluminum foil is a ubiquitous helper in kitchens worldwide, but one detail of its use is always confusing: Should you wrap food with the shiny or matt side of foil?
An article on Den Offentlige illuminates this aspect and provides a surprisingly simple explanation that many people are unaware of.
The difference between the shiny and matt sides of the aluminum foil is not just a question of appearance.
According to the Danish supplier Cares.dk, which specializes in cleaning products and household items, among other things, the orientation of the foil actually has an effect on heat regulation.
While the shiny side of the film tends to reflect heat, the matt side lets the heat through better. If you turn the shiny side inward, the food will stay warm for longer.
Conversely, the matt side can be turned inwards to allow the food to cool down more quickly, slowing down bacterial growth.
This insight into aluminum foil is a perfect example of how traditional kitchen gadgets often have more to offer on closer inspection than is apparent at first glance.
It shows that simple physical principles also play a role in the modern kitchen and that a deeper understanding can help us improve our cooking and food storage techniques.
