From January 1, 2025, new plastic beverage bottles and cans in Austria will be subject to a 0.25 euro deposit. Austrian supermarket Spar provides information on the necessary changes:
The deposit affects all drinks except milk and mixed milk drinks in plastic bottles and cans between 0.1 and 3 liters.
During a transitional period until March 31, bottlers still have the opportunity to fill empty cans and bottles without a deposit—so that packaging does not have to be thrown away.

With the deposit, please use the reverse vending machine. Empty bottles and cans; do not crush them.
Please put them in the yellow bag or the glass collection without a deposit.
Spar is investing around 60 million euros in technical equipment alone. It already sells over 25% of its drinks in returnable bottles.
