Since the beginning of this week, Vienna’s city centre has been lit up with Christmas decorations. Passers-by are surprised.
While strolling through the first district on Tuesday afternoon, a Viennese noticed that Christmas decorations had already been put up in Rotenturmstraße. This was very surprising for the Viennese at this point in time.
According to the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, however, Christmas lights are important to the capital’s shopping districts.
“The City of Vienna and the Vienna Chamber of Commerce have therefore agreed to increase the joint funding for the operation of Christmas lights from 50 percent to 75 percent for this year and next year. Our aim is to ensure that as many of Vienna’s streets as possible can shine festively,” explains Peter Hanke, Vienna City Councillor for Economics and Finance.
The City of Vienna and the Vienna Chamber of Commerce will cover 75 percent of the operating costs of the Christmas lights—mainly installation, dismantling, and storage. The companies will bear the rest. The Vienna Chamber of Commerce handles coordination.
“The festive lighting of our city creates a feel-good atmosphere that invites both visitors and locals to linger and thus promotes the positive development of Vienna as a business location. We want to support Vienna’s retailers in this to the best of our ability,” says Walter Ruck, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce.
