The City of Vienna’s Cybercrime Helpline, which was founded two years ago as the first point of contact for cybercrime, has supported over 2,000 potential victims of fraud since its inception. This year, the helpline has been contacted more than 1,000 times.

An analysis has shown that cyber fraud was the reason for consultations in around 55 percent of situations. This mainly involves the loss of money and information online. Phishing and blackmail emails are the next two biggest factors in the requests for help, each accounting for around eleven percent. Other factors include data protection and malware.

The free Vienna cybercrime helpline has been in operation for two years.

“Online crime is one of the dark sides of digitalization,” says City Councillor for Digitalization Ulli Sima (SPÖ). With the free “Cybercrime Helpline,” the city has now been offering a simple and reliable first point of contact for two years, which provides rapid support in suspected cases of cybercrime, said Sima. The helpline can be reached on 01/4000-4006 from Monday to Friday (weekdays) from 7.30 am to 5.00 pm. The city advises people to inform the police immediately in the event of suspected cases.
