A travel document is required every time you cross a border, even when traveling within the European Union and the Schengen area. This also applies to short trips abroad, for example, to Austria’s neighboring countries.
Travel document required for every trip abroad
Even in a borderless Europe, you must be able to prove your identity at all times. A travel document is required every time you cross a border, even when traveling within the EU and the Schengen area. This also applies to short trips abroad. Crossing the border without a travel document is an administrative offense punishable by law. A passport or, within the EU or the Schengen area, a valid identity card is also valid as a travel document. Good to know: If your passport is no longer valid and you will soon be traveling again, make an appointment with your local authority to update it as quickly as possible. Especially before the upcoming travel season, there may be longer waiting times (sometimes several weeks).
Important
The driver’s license is not a valid travel document.

The express passport is given preferential treatment during production and delivery. A courier service delivers the one-day express passport on the next working day (Monday-Friday, except public holidays). Can I still have my child entered in my passport?
Since June 15, 2012, every child needs their passport to travel abroad. Entry into a parent’s passport is no longer valid from this date.
What about the identity card?
The ID card (information on issuing an ID card) is valid as a travel document within the EU or the Schengen area. A new ID card was introduced in Austria on August 2, 2021. All ID cards issued before this date remain valid until they expire.
Where can I find out about the entry requirements of other countries?
Information about the valid entry requirements for the respective vacation country can be found in the worldwide ÖAMTC country info under the category “Personal documents.”
The passport has disappeared – what now?
If you still have two to three days before departure, you can have an express passport issued (identical to a regular passport, only more expensive due to the express issue). If time is short, you can have an emergency passport issued. However, the emergency passport is only valid for a limited time, depending on the destination. It is issued for the duration of a trip. However, the maximum validity of an emergency passport in particularly justified cases is one year. They are issued by the competent authorities (also outside office hours via the journal service):
Proof of an urgent reason (e.g., flight ticket, report of loss or theft)
Official photo ID (e.g., driving license or identity card)
A passport photo (not older than six months)
Birth certificate
Additional documents, if necessary
Costs: 75.90 euros
Important
Find out in advance whether an emergency passport is accepted in the country you are visiting and whether other requirements must be met (e.g., Turkey, USA). For example, you can only enter the USA with an Austrian emergency passport if you also apply for a visa before entering the country (an interview appointment must be arranged) with the relevant authorities in Austria, and the emergency passport is valid for at least six months beyond the duration of the visa. This may also incur additional costs. More information on accepting emergency passports is available from the Foreign Ministry.
What do you do if a lost passport is found?
Even if a passport that has been reported lost or stolen is found, it should no longer be used. Such a passport is listed in the international search databases and no longer entitles the holder to cross the border. Entry to the host country or boarding may be refused.
What should you do if your passport has been stolen or lost abroad?
You need to act quickly. The following steps are necessary: Report the loss or theft.
A loss or theft report must be made to the nearest police station.
Have an emergency passport issued.
After submitting the loss or theft report, you can obtain an emergency passport from an Austrian representative authority for your journey home.
Re-reporting to the police in Austria
After returning to Austria, the loss or theft must be reported again to the police. The Austrian theft report and all other necessary documents must be confirmed before an application for a new passport can be submitted to the passport authority.
Tip
To make it easier to act locally, you should take copies of the documents with you and keep them separate from the originals in your luggage. It is also helpful to scan your passport and save it in a cloud service or in your mailbox, for example, to access it quickly.
