Austria’s Eurovision champion, JJ—Johannes Pietsch—returned to Vienna on Sunday, sparking a media frenzy and back-to-back coverage on ORF. The 24-year-old countertenor, fresh off his victory in Basel with the operatic-techno anthem “Wasted Love,” was greeted at Vienna International Airport by hundreds of fans waving flags, playing his song, and showering him with hugs and roses.

JJ, who also performs at the Vienna State Opera, held his Eurovision trophy and thanked them for their warm welcome. His emotional homecoming quickly transitioned into a press conference at the ORF headquarters, where he addressed local and international media and reflected on the song’s message of resilience and unity.

The national broadcaster ORF aired extensive coverage of JJ’s return, including live footage from the airport and the press event. The programming followed a retrospective on Austria’s Eurovision history. The programming underscored JJ’s unique blend of classical training and pop appeal, which helped secure Austria’s third Eurovision win.

President Alexander Van der Bellen joined the chorus of praise, posting on social media: “What a success! What a voice! What a show! All of Austria is happy.” Chancellor Christian Stoecker echoed the sentiment, calling JJ’s win a “great success” and a historic moment for Austrian music.

With cities across Austria now vying to host Eurovision 2026, JJ expressed hope that Vienna would be chosen—and that he could co-host alongside his mentor, Conchita Wurst. For now, JJ’s triumphant return has united the country in celebration, with ORF’s wall-to-wall coverage capturing the pride of a nation.
