The Cost of Traveling in Vienna Without a Valid Ticket

VIENNA – Commuters and visitors navigating the Austrian capital are being reminded of the importance of carrying a valid ticket, as the cost of being caught without one has officially increased as part of a city-wide adjustment to public transport tariffs for 2026.

Operating on an “honesty system,” Vienna’s public transport network—which includes the U-Bahn (subway), trams, buses, and S-Bahn commuter trains—does not utilize ticket barriers. While this allows for seamless travel, it relies on passengers taking personal responsibility for purchasing and, where necessary, validating their tickets before boarding.

As of January 1, 2026, the financial penalties for fare evasion have been increased to ensure the system remains sustainable and fair for all paying passengers. If you are caught by ticket inspectors without a valid, properly validated ticket, the following fees apply:

  • Immediate Payment: €135.00
  • Payment via Slip (Later Payment): €145.00 (or higher depending on administrative circumstances)

Wiener Linien, the city’s primary transit operator, emphasizes that these fees are “additional transport fees” and are applied in addition to the cost of a regular ticket. If a passenger is caught without a ticket but can prove within two weeks that they were the holder of a valid personalized pass at the time of the inspection, the fee may be waived.

Key Reminders for Passengers

To avoid the steep penalty, transport authorities advise keeping the following guidelines in mind:

  • Validate Before You Ride: While digital tickets are valid immediately, physical paper tickets must be validated at the machines located at station entrances or inside vehicles before or immediately upon boarding. Failure to validate a ticket is treated the same as not having a ticket at all.
  • Keep Your ID Handy: If you are using a personalized travel pass (such as an annual ticket), you must carry a valid photo ID. Inspectors require this to verify that the pass belongs to the passenger.
  • Immediate Purchase: If you are unable to buy a ticket at a station, you must purchase one before boarding, such as through the WienMobil app. While some trams offer onboard ticket machines, they often charge a higher fare and cannot guarantee the availability of change.
  • Don’t Run: It is a common misconception that inspectors cannot stop passengers. Under the current regulations, transit employees are authorized to stop individuals attempting to avoid an inspection.

A Fair System for Everyone

The adjustment in fines coincides with a broader update to Vienna’s public transport fare structure, which saw changes to ticket prices and the discontinuation of certain multi-day passes to simplify the network’s offerings.

“Vienna’s public transport is one of the best ways to get around the city,” officials stated. “By purchasing your ticket before your journey, you help ensure that we can continue to provide safe, reliable, and efficient service for all.”

For those planning to visit or travel across the city, official tickets can be purchased at station kiosks, via the WienMobil app, or on the official Wiener Linien website.
