As reported, the EU has extended the regulation that cell phone calls from abroad to Austria must be charged at the Austrian rate (“Roam like at Home”). And besides the same price, the quality of roaming services (e.g., internet speed) has to be like at home, as long as the network in the vacation country is technically equivalent. Great progress, but there are still some pitfalls. For example, this EU rule does not apply to nearby countries such as Turkey, Great Britain, Andorra, San Marino, or the Vatican City State.
Furthermore, on ships (cruises, ferries) or airplanes, the connection is established via satellite and is therefore not included in the “home tariff.”
It also happens that the cell phone dials into the network of a non-EU country near the border, which is often much more expensive.
