If you want to make pancakes quickly, you have to pay a lot more for the necessary ingredients than you did about a year ago. The current inflation check shows: Inexpensive sunflower oil has become almost 137 percent more expensive year-on-year, flour 98 percent, eggs 40 percent, and milk 23 percent – which applies to the cheapest products available at seven supermarkets and discount stores in Vienna.
The AK inflation check between August 1 and 4 at seven stores (Billa, Billa Plus, Spar, Interspar, Hofer Lidl, and Penny) shows: that low-priced sunflower oil still cost 1.19 euros in September 2021, now 2.83 euros. “That is a plus of almost 138 percent,” calculates the AK.
For the cheapest wheat flour (one kilogram, handy), stores were still charging 0.40 euros in the fall of 2021, now 0.79 euros – a price increase of 98 percent.
The cheapest eggs (size M, barn-raised) were 0.16 euros in September 2021 and 0.22 euros in August – a 40 percent increase. The most affordable whole milk was available at 1.05 euros in September 2021, now at 1.29 euros – an increase of around 23 percent.
Inexpensive private labels are often not available.
“A major problem is that, in addition to the sharp price increases, cheaper private labels are sometimes not available in stores, and consumers have to resort to even more expensive products. At Hofer, for example, there was no sunflower oil in the stores we visited. Many people groan at the high prices when shopping. Those with less money compare the prices and reach for cheaper products,” says the AK, pleading for strict monitoring.
