The end of the cell phone signature was officially decided recently: from December 5, you will no longer be able to use it to log in to oesterreich.gv.at and the “Digitales Amt” app.
This is causing concern among some people: How are we supposed to deal with digital official channels in the future? Do you have to go to the municipal office to be activated for the successor system, ID Austria?
Cell phone signature becomes “ID Austria with the basic function”
“Nobody needs to worry that they won’t be able to do anything on December 5. Everything that is already possible today with the cell phone signature can, of course, also be done with the new ID Austria. The changeover is quick and easy,” says Florian Tursky, State Secretary for Digitalization.
To make it easy, there are two versions of the ID Austria. The normal ID Austria is the full version. This is required for the digital driver’s license, for example. “ID Austria with the basic function” is exactly what the cell phone signature is now.
If you register with the cell phone signature in the “Digitales Amt” app or at oesterreich.gv.at starting December 5, the conversion process will start automatically. If you don’t want to wait until then and have five minutes to spare, you can do it now, either on the website or in the app.
On the website
Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to change the cell phone signature in the browser to the ID Austria with basic function.
Call up oesterreich.gv.at
Tap on the login symbol at the top right. This looks like a person.
Select “Log in” and “Switch from cell phone signature to ID Austria”. If you do not see the “Log in” option, you must first “Log out”.
Register now with Handy-Signatur.
Agree to “Participation in the pilot operation of ID Austria”. No need to worry: the pilot operation will automatically switch to regular operation on December 5 without you having to do anything.
That’s it: the cell phone signature is now “ID Austria with basic function.”
If the Handy-Signatur was officially registered at that time, you can upgrade to the full version of ID Austria right away. In the next step, you will be asked to enter the ID number (passport or driving license) with which you registered at the time.
In the app
If you want to complete the digital official channels on your smartphone, you can download the “Digitales Amt” app. This is available for Android in the Play Store and for iPhones in the App Store. Check whether you have found the correct app: The publisher of the correct app is “BM für Digitalisierung und Wirtschaftsstandort” (Android) or “Bundesministerium für Digitalisierung und Wirtschaftsstandort” (iOS).
A smartphone with a fingerprint scanner or face scan is required to use the app. A second screen device with internet access, such as a computer or tablet, is required for the one-off activation.
Open the app
Select “Log in with ID Austria/cell phone signature.”
You will now be asked to open oesterreich.gv.at/digitalesamt on your computer.
Log in to the computer with your cell phone’s signature.
Now continue on your smartphone by selecting “Scan QR code now.”
The app asks for access authorization for fingerprint or face scanning; you agree to this.
The app then requests access to the camera, which you also grant.
The camera is now used to scan the QR code, which is displayed on the computer.
This links the smartphone to ID Austria.
The fingerprint or face is scanned for confirmation.
Then “participation in the pilot operation of ID Austria” is approved.
Once the cell phone signature has been officially registered, you can upgrade to the full version of ID Austria.
Upgrade to the full version of ID Austria for the digital driver’s license
If you have the “ID Austria with the basic function” and want to use the digital driver’s license, you have to upgrade to the regular ID Austria. To do this, you must be registered with the “Digitales Amt” app and visit a registration office. Please note: The digital driving license can only be used if you have a check card driving license.
Here are the step-by-step instructions for switching from the “ID Austria with the basic function” in the “Digitales Amt” app to the ID Austria:
There is a list of registration authorities at oesterreich.gv.at/id-austria/registrierungsbehoerden.html. Please make an appointment.
Take your smartphone, an official photo ID, and a passport photo with you to the appointment.
Once your identity has been verified, the authority sends a one-time password (TAN) to the app, which you give to the authority employee.
Consent to use ID Austria is then given in the app and confirmed with a face or fingerprint scan.
From now on, you can select “ID cards” in the app.
There you will be asked to download the “eAusweise” app. This contains the digital driving license, which can be shown as a QR code.
How to register the ID Austria if you do not yet have a signature
Download the “Digitales Amt” app on your smartphone
Open a-trust.at/id-austria-vorregistrierung/ on your PC or tablet.
Enter your personal details and the number of your passport or ID card.
A QR code is then displayed on the screen.
Open the “Digitales Amt” app and select “Continue registration: Scan QR code”.
After scanning the QR code with your cell phone camera, the process is complete.
Make an appointment with a registration authority to activate your ID Austria there. There is a list of registration authorities at oesterreich.gv.at/id-austria/registrierungsbehoerden.html.
Take your smartphone, the official photo ID whose number you entered during pre-registration, and a passport photo with you to the appointment.
Once your identity has been verified, the authority will send a one-time password (TAN) to the app, which you then give to the authority employee.
You then give your consent to use ID Austria in the app and confirm this with a face or fingerprint scan.
You now have the ID Austria and can use the digital driving license in the “Digitales Amt” app under “ID cards” if required.
