Children between the ages of six and ten use smartphones and tablets much longer than before. They spend 42 minutes on the Internet almost every day. This means that this figure will double by 2018.
This is confirmed by the Children’s Media Study 2020, which is carried out every two years on behalf of the province of Upper Austria. The coronavirus does not stop at any topic. It leaves clear and probably durable traces in the medium behavior of the Upper Austrian children, means David Pfarrhofer of Marktforschungsinstitut market. “If we had not had the Coronavirus, there would have been the Smartphone and even then the computer would have been used a little more intensively, but by far not with the breadth and dynamism,” says Pfarrhofer.
Apps and learning programs in elementary school
What is new is that almost 70 percent of all six to ten-year-olds now have Internet access via W-Lan in their children’s rooms. In 2018, this figure was only 45 percent. Coronavirus-induced learning programs and apps are also being used more and more frequently in the classroom. 85 percent of elementary school teachers use them. That is an increase of 25 percent. Christine Haberlander (ÖVP), Deputy Governor and Education Officer, speaks of a milestone in the education sector. “I am convinced that this is a trend that will continue. That is why I am also glad that there will also be corresponding offers in education and further training, that we are increasingly training educators here”, said Haberlander.
Playing outdoors in the first place
For the Children’s Media Study 2020, the leisure-time behavior was also surveyed. And with 80 percent, playing outdoors was the most popular. The smartphone simply can’t keep up with this.
