Today, Sunday, the “situational winter equipment obligation” for cars and trucks up to 3.5 tons came into force again. From November 1, motorists in Austria must drive on snow, slush or ice with winter tires or have snow chains mounted on at least two drive wheels. However, chains are only permitted if the road is covered with snow or ice throughout. The police can impose fines of up to 5,000 euros for violations of the equipment requirement.

From November 1, trucks and buses weighing more than 3.5 tons must be equipped with winter tires, at least on the drive wheels. The obligation to use winter tires applies to these vehicles regardless of whether or not there is snow on the road. Legally recognized as winter tires are models that are marked with the designations “Matsch und Schnee” (M+S, M.S. or M&S) and have a tread depth of at least four millimeters, or five millimeters for diagonal tires. The obligation to use winter tyres applies until 15 April of the following year, for buses until 15 March.
