It is expected that already by the middle of next year about 70 percent of the approximately 47 million citizens of Spain will be vaccinated.
According to government estimates, Spanish citizens will be able to be voluntarily vaccinated against the coronavirus as early as January. “At some point in January” it will be possible to start the vaccinations, said Health Minister Salvador Illa on Saturday in interviews with various Spanish media. A vaccination obligation would be legally possible in Spain, “but in the opinion of many experts probably even counterproductive”.
Recently, Illa had already announced that the vaccination would be free of charge for Spaniards. The minister expressed the conviction that a large part of the Spaniards will want to be vaccinated. “Spain is a country with a strong vaccination tradition,” said the minister of the left-wing government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. It is expected that already by the middle of next year around 70 percent of Spain’s approximately 47 million citizens will be vaccinated.
Only on Friday Sánchez had announced a “national vaccination plan”. He assured that in the first half of 2021 “a considerable part of the population” will be vaccinated within the framework of this project. “Our country, together with Germany, will be the first in the European Union to have a complete vaccination plan.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, more than 1.5 million people have been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Spain. More than 42,600 people have died with Covid-19, but the number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days fell from 233 to 168 in one week.
