The second shopping day after the hard lockdown, which fell on the Marian holiday – traditionally a strong sales day for retailers – was also quiet in Vienna. “There is moderately much going on. Actually, we expected more. I wouldn’t say quiet now, I would say normal,” Margarete Gumprecht, Retail Manager at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, described the situation in the shopping streets and shopping centers in the early afternoon durng a meeting conducted by APA.
The customers would behave in a disciplined manner and not linger in the stores longer than necessary: “The customers know specifically what they need, they are very concrete. They have certainly researched what they want in advance.” People who would go on a shopping spree would, according to their perception, hardly ever or not at all: “I believe that these spontaneous purchases that used to exist in the past will definitely not happen this year.”
Consumer electronics, digital games, televisions, cell phones, computers, printers and printer cartridges are particularly in demand at the moment, Gumprecht listed. He also said that a lot of things are bought for your own home – “to make yourself comfortable at home”. This is definitely a trend. In addition, depending on the situation, watches and jewelry were also in demand, the divisional manager referred to feedback received in this regard.
