In an interview conducted by Austria`s television channel ORF, Chancellor Kurz analyzes the right way to deal with the corona pandemic: “We must do everything now to prevent a third wave from catching up with us” – with an appeal, but also a self-critical look back at the turn of the year, Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said. Basically, he says, one slogan applies: testing and vaccination will restore people’s freedoms. Kurz sees the fact that in the lockdown the lifts are open and not everyone sees this as a consistent approach: he would have liked to see tougher measures in many cases, but also tries to pay attention to the interests and objections of the countries.
The fact that Austrians experienced the phases between lockdown and easing as a form of high-speed ride is not surprising for Kurz: “That is simply the logic of a pandemic, that pandemics usually come in waves and therefore, of course, the phase between the waves is also used to experience more freedom again. That was necessary in terms of economic policy and social policy, because we would all be going crazy if there weren’t somewhat more normal phases again between the lockdowns.”
For the present, he considers the consistent implementation of the lockdown measures now underway to be important and believes, in perspective, that testing will prevail – and subsequently also the vaccination strategy. Now, especially when it comes to vaccination, experts would have to explain why vaccination is actually as safe as any other vaccination you get. And as a result, the role model effect and the realization that vaccination brings us back the old freedoms, would ensure the sustained success of vaccination.
