Nearly two-thirds of those infected with Corona are younger than 35

Of the 5,934 coronavirus cases officially reported between Aug. 9 and Aug. 15, 64.2 percent – 3,816 in absolute numbers – were among this group. Strikingly, six- to 14-year-olds now contribute more to the incidence of infection, accounting for 10.7 percent of the total, than do those over 55, who account for 10.5 percent overall.

Most corona infections among 15- to 24-year-olds
As shown in the latest breakdown by age group from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), 15- to 24-year-olds remain the most affected age group, accounting for 28.4 percent. However, their share is steadily declining. In the last week of July, it still accounted for 37.9 percent, and in the first week of August, 32.9 percent. In contrast, the proportion of infected six- to 14-year-olds is rising noticeably – in the first week of August, at 8.4 percent, it was still well below the ten-percent mark. A connection with the particularly infectious delta variant and the fact that under-twelve-year-olds are not vaccinated and less than three percent of twelve- to 15-year-old boys and girls are currently fully immunized against Covid-19 is imminent.

A look at seniors proves that vaccination protects against infection, with 92.20 percent of men over 84 and more than 83.43 percent of women over 84 now fully protected. Across Austria, just 47 new infections were detected in the group of over 85-year-olds in the previous week – this corresponded to 0.8 percent of all cases. In the group of 75- to 84-year-olds, there were 75 infected persons or 1.3 percent, and in the 65- to 74-year-olds 146 new cases or 2.5 percent. Among those aged 75 to 84, 88.32 percent of men and 84.54 percent of women have now received full vaccination protection; among those aged 65 to 74, 81.59 percent of men and 79.92 percent of women.

In contrast, in the group most affected by Corona, 15- to 24-year-olds, who on top of that are likely to have more social contacts on average than the older population, only 43.95 percent of boys and 45.08 of young women are fully immunized.
