Advent time in Austria is traditionally also punch time. A mug with the hot alcoholic drink in all flavours or mulled wine is for many people part of the visit to a Christmas market. While Graz sets an example with an alcohol-free line, the federal government will not impose alcohol ban.
This also means no restrictions on drinks. Instead, you can rely on the well-known baby elephant or a minimum distance of one meter. Every domestic Advent and Christmas market must implement its own prevention and hygiene concept.
This is the new rule in the “new winter normality”:
- Risk analysis
- Regulation of the number of visitors, i.e. a limit on the number of people in order to avoid overcrowding
- So-called equalization measures, equivalent to the distance between the individual huts
- Gastronomy stands should provide sufficient space for safe consumption.
- And a lot of communication such as floor markings for the baby elephant distance or pictograms for easy explanation
It remains to be seen whether this personal responsibility will still work later on.
