A second vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 has now been approved in Russia. However, important tests may have been skipped, just as with the first vaccine (“Sputnik V”).
With “EpiVacCorona” and the first vaccine “Sputnik V”, the pandemic should be defeated, if President Vladimir Putin has his way. He plans to start soon with mass vaccinations of the Russian population. European experts think this is going too fast, important tests should simply not be skipped!
“Healthy people are exposed to high risk”.
“Of course, the vaccination could work very well, but perhaps not at all or not long enough. Perhaps the infection will be intensified. It may cause side effects, sometimes severe ones. If precise tests are missing, it is simply impossible to say. In this way, one exposes healthy people to a high risk without a clear benefit”, says infectiologist Prof. Dr. Heinz Burgmann of MedUni Vienna. “Ethically not justifiable!” is his conclusion.
Only after the important Phase 3 of the vaccine development, in which 20,000 to 30,000 people are administered the substance under controlled conditions, can it be seen how and whether it works. Several studies are already in this phase. However, there are repeated interruptions and, in case of abnormalities, “corrective action” is taken.
The expert hopes for several approvals of vaccines for different parts of the population in Austria, for example for risk groups – perhaps even earlier than mid 2021: “It is possible to shorten the bureaucracy, but please don’t shorten the tests!
