Does a mouth and nose mask adorn your rearview mirror in the car? An insurance expert explains the risks involved

Whether you walk past parked cars or are on the road: Again and again it is noticeable that people have a mouth and nose mask dangling from their rear view mirror. The advantage is obvious. If one has forgotten it at home, one can fall back on the spare mask at the mirror on the way. But is it even allowed to hang it there? Or does that limit road safety too much?

Mask in the car: You should know these risks
Frank Mauelshagen, head of motor insurance at ERGO Insurance, explains: “This is allowed, but not advisable: the driver’s field of vision must always remain clear. Mouth and nose covers are usually much larger than a scented tree, for example, and can therefore severely impair visibility. In addition, jiggling back and forth while driving can impair the driver’s attention”. Those who permanently register movements at the edge of the field of vision will eventually get used to it and may notice movements of other road users such as pedestrians and cyclists too late. In the worst case, this can lead to an accident.

Mauelshagen advises: “It is therefore better to store the mask in one of the storage compartments, for example in the glove box. In a bag or a small pouch it is also protected from dirt.
