In Italy, the number of people infected with the coronavirus and the number of deaths on Sunday fell again. 541 deaths on or with corona were reported, compared to 686 the day before, the Ministry of Health announced. This means that 54,904 people have died with or from corona virus since the beginning of the pandemic on February 20.
The number of registered new infections fell from 24,214 to 20,648. 176,934 tests were carried out within 24 hours, 11.7 percent were positive. The number of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients in quarantine was 759,139, and the number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients fell for the sixth consecutive day from 33,299 to 32,879, the Ministry of Health reported. There were 3,752 patients in intensive care units in the country, nine fewer than the previous day.
After the measures in Italy seem to be taking effect, Rome has eased restrictions in some regions. Lombardy, Piedmont and Calabria, which were declared a “red zone” at the beginning of November, were downgraded to “orange zones” on Sunday. This allows stores and restaurants to stay open again in the run-up to Christmas.
The previously “orange” regions of Liguria and Sicily are yellow again since Sunday. Restaurants and pubs can stay open until 18.00 hrs. The president of Veneto, Luca Zaia, opened the shopping centers in his region again on Saturday. South Tyrol, Valle d’Aosta, Tuscany, Abruzzo and Campania remain red regions for the time being with partial lockdown and closed pubs and stores with the exception of supermarkets and pharmacies.
