Health Minister Rudolf Anschober spoke to “Ö1-Morgenjournal” about the new relaxations and who now checks at the hairdresser.

The government agreed on Monday on soft opening steps from February 8. Schools, trade and body-related service providers may open under strict security requirements. Here’s the rundown on all the new rules.

“It is urgent that the population gets a perspective and that we get by reasonably well in the next few weeks until Easter,” Health Minister Rudolf Anschober explained the opening steps in the “Ö1-Morgenjournal”.

According to AGES, 29.8 percent of the intensive care beds are being used to capacity. Now even intensive care patients from Portugal are to be admitted. “We have massive improvements since November, when the 7-day incidence was 587. The health system was at the tipping point, but the situation is not over in the intensive care units. There are about 300 patients more than usual because of severe coronary events,” Anschober said.

Nevertheless, it is only possible to open cautiously at the moment. His goal is to “get through well until Easter.” There also the vaccinations will be “relatively far rolled out”.

In the future, a visit to the hairdresser will only be possible with a negative test. Anschober emphasized that customers as well as service providers still need an FFP2 mask. It is necessary because of the mutation. Employees will be tested at least once a week. “Here the responsibility lies with the employer, there will also be random checks by the health authorities and the executive,” the health minister stressed.

Penalties for mask violations have been increased to 90 euros to “achieve a deterrent effect.” “The behavior of the population will show whether we have a problem again in the next few weeks or get through well until Easter,” believes the Green politician.

Furthermore, the government has presented a new vaccination plan. This had to be changed due to low vaccine quantities. Accordingly, the general population will not be vaccinated until the middle of the second quarter. As Anschober points out, the vaccine from AstraZeneca will only be used for those under 65 in the first quarter.

Will there be another lockdown after the opening steps in about two weeks? “No, that depends on all of us, the long lockdown with little interruption has worn off. With hope and perspective for the people, I believe that participation will improve again. We can make it so that we reach Easter well,” Anschober remains optimistic.
