The FFP2 mask requirement can now also be ordered by local authorities for certain outdoor areas. A spokesman for Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Green Party) confirmed today that a corresponding decree, which previously allowed the ordering of mouth-nose protection outdoors, was adapted accordingly in February. In view of the further increasing number of new infections, the Minister spoke on Thursday of a “risk phase until Easter”.
A duty also in the free one FFP2 mask to carry, exists at present already on outdoor markets, so Anschober on the edge of a press conference. With the adaptation of the decree, such a duty can now, if necessary, be ordered by the local authorities for other heavily frequented outdoor places – such as queues in front of shopping centers – an FFP2 duty.
The local authorities, specifically the provincial governors or district administrative authorities, are responsible, “if they consider it necessary,” a spokesman for Anschober told APA. “This is not the usual area, but where there is a high frequency, where the minimum distance can not always be maintained for various reasons,” Anschober himself stressed.

Addressing the rise in new infections to just under 2,000 recently, Anschober said at the press conference, “The number is one that has risen in recent days, that’s how it is.” He said there is pressure on infection numbers due to the “ever-increasing spread of the two mutations.”
“That’s why the two weeks are a risk period until Easter. The changeover, the transformation from the parent virus to the two mutations, which are much more contagious, is an issue that adds to the pressure. We are counteracting this with the FFP2 masks, the minimum distance and very strongly with the testing.”
