The “Green Passport” will be introduced in Austria this week as a QR code. For the time being, however, vaccinated people are excluded from the Green Passport – only recovered and tested people can use it.
The electronic Green Passport via QR code is to be implemented at the end of this week – but not yet for vaccinated persons. The first certificates with EU-compliant QR codes can be created and retrieved digitally for recovered and tested persons at the end of this week, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday in response to an inquiry from the Austrian Press Agency.
“Green passport”: no concrete date for vaccinated people
For vaccinated persons, the implementation is to take place in a “next step,” a spokeswoman for the department said. A concrete date for this was not mentioned. However, the Ministry of Health clarified in this regard that digital proof of vaccination can already be created and downloaded from the electronic vaccination certificate at www.gesundheit.gv.at using a cell phone signature or citizen card.
An extension of the proof by means of QR code in the EU standard takes place in a next step. As of July 1, this certificate will be valid throughout the EU, the Ministry of Health confirmed the Europe-wide plan to implement the electronic green passport. After that, the respective certificates will be mutually recognized at the borders by the member states. It should be noted, however, that despite the green passport, different rules apply in all countries.
Green passport delayed
Last week, the Ministry of Health announced that the electronic Green Passport within Austria via QR code, which had actually already been announced for June 4, would be delayed by at least one week. As a reason for this, the ministry had cited changes in technical requirements announced by the EU at short notice, which made IT adjustments necessary in Austria. However, the EU had rejected this statement.
