There is hope for all those who are already longing so much for their next trip: Europe is set to make the Green Passport operational on July 1, 2021.
The EU Commission has consulted regarding the Green Passport and plans to implement it from July 1, 2021. The digital European vaccination card will make it possible to travel without restrictions. This means freedom of travel soon for all Austrians as well.
Freedom to travel thanks to the green passport?
But what exactly is the Green Passport? And how does it affect travel? The digital proof shows which status the owner has in connection with the coronavirus. There are the following notations:
Tested
Recovered
Vaccinated
This means that the Green Passport not only allows freedom of travel for Corona vaccinated people, but also for those who can prove a negative test result or have a medical confirmation that one has already been sick with COVID-19 and has fully recovered.
The Green Passport may contain the following information:
Vaccination certificate
Test certificate (PCR test or rapid antigen test)
A recovery certificate issued by a physician (to be issued no earlier than the 20th day after the first positive PCR test result)
Privacy & Barcode
But what about data protection? Certificates are issued in the local language and in English, either digitally or in paper form. They also include an EU-readable barcode that provides the following data: Identification of the individual, vaccine used, batch number, date and location of vaccination or testing. The data is only in the national database and is not stored elsewhere.
Many will be wondering if the Green Passport will cost, and if so, how much it will cost. The great news is that it will be issued free of charge to all EU citizens and their family members, as well as to third country nationals residing in EU countries. In addition, the Digital Green Certificate will be valid for the duration of the pandemic.
