Tested, recovered, vaccinated – these are the magic three Gs with which one can travel through Europe in the future. The Green Passport provides proof of this. How it works and what it brings – the big overview.

What is the green pass?
The Green Passport is a certificate of Covid 19 status that can be used to enter certain places, such as restaurants, movie theaters, events or to travel. The certificates can either be printed out or saved – for example, on a cell phone.

They are a supplement to the previously existing proofs such as the vaccination passport, vaccination cards or a segregation notice. These proofs will continue to be valid after the introduction of the Green Passport.

Does the Green Passport already exist?
In Austria, you can already use the Green Passport as long as you are considered recovered or tested. The proof of vaccination has been activated on Saturday. Though everything has not yet been converted as reported by the health Ministry. Full activation will be implemented on July 1, 2021. Then the Green Passport will be available on a European level.

What are the advantages of the European Green Passport?
The certificates will have a QR code that the other person – at the border, for example – can simply scan. This avoids the need to decipher foreign-language certificates, and passenger traffic within Europe will once again become easier.

How do I get the green passport on my cell phone?
To store the Covid certificate, a cell phone signature or citizen card is required. In both cases it is a proof of identity.

Cell phone signature: This must be activated via FinanzOnline. Detailed instructions can be found here: www.buergerkarte.at or at www.finanzonline.at

Citizen card: The citizen card must also be activated via FinanzOnline – for example, by using the e-card – and a card reader is also required. Detailed instructions can also be found here: www.buergerkarte.at.

If you have a cell phone signature or citizen card, you can download and save the Covid certificate on the gesundheit.gv.at website.

How can I use the Green Passport without a cell phone?
For people without smartphones, it is possible to have all certificates printed out via the municipalities, district administrative authorities or the ELGA ombudsman offices.

Will the Green Pass be mandatory?
No. There will be no mandatory use of the digitally and analogously available certificates with QR code. It will still be possible in Austria to use the previously common proofs such as a certificate of segregation or officially recognized vaccination certificates.

Are Austrian certificates also recognized in other countries?
Yes. In order to ensure the verifiability of the corresponding certificates throughout the EU, the necessary technical interfaces between the systems of the member states will be created. The certificates will then be readable throughout Europe. At every border, you can then use the QR code to prove that you have been vaccinated, tested or have recovered. However, there are still ambiguities regarding the partial vaccinations. In Austria, the vaccination is valid 22 days after the first bite. In other EU countries, one must be fully vaccinated. A uniform regulation is still being worked on here.

However, which facilitations for vaccinated, tested or recovered people are connected with these certificates depends on the respective epidemiological situation and is decided by each member state itself. Before entering another country, one should continue to inform oneself about the existing regulations. A good overview of entry regulations can be found at https://reopen.europa.eu/de

What happens if you falsify the proofs?
Falsification is a violation of the Covid-19 opening regulation. This is punishable by an administrative fine of up to 500 euros. In addition, there may be criminal consequences.
