Recently, Johnson Johnson was also vaccinated more frequently in Austria. The handling with the single vaccination and the predicted high effectiveness against the delta variant make the vaccine currently in demand.

Over the weekend, there were long lines in front of vaccination boxes in Vienna and vaccination centers in Tyrol. The reason: corona vaccinations without pre-registration, respectively without appointment. In the course of the film festival on Vienna’s Rathausplatz, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was also vaccinated there in a vaccination box. For under 18-year-olds, the vaccine Biontech and Pfizer is offered. The second shot in these cases is given at the Austria Center Vienna.

It is the only approved coronavaccine for which a single vaccination is sufficient and the second vaccination date, such as with Biontech/Pfizer or AstraZeneca, is omitted. In addition, with this vector vaccine, vaccine protection is present after two weeks and fully established after 28 days.

In a study published Thursday, the Johnson & Johnson group’s vaccine was also found to be highly effective against the more highly contagious delta variant. The group said the vaccine was 85 percent effective against the mutant first discovered in India. According to research data, immunization would last for at least eight months. The blood of those already vaccinated was examined.

However, there are not as many doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine available as there are from other manufacturers. The Austrian government decided to purchase 42 million additional vaccine doses for 2022 and 2023 – at a cost of 800 million euros, with the option to top up.

Of the doses ordered, Pfizer-Biontech accounts for 35 million, Moderna for three million and Johnson & Johnson for four million. The cost to date of the 72.5 million doses purchased and ordered thus amounts to 1.2 billion euros.

Vaccination without appointment continues in Vienna
This week, vaccination without appointment is also possible in the Austria Center, vaccinated AstraZeneca (10,500 doses). The second appointment four weeks later will be arranged directly on site. At Rathausplatz, Johnson & Johnson and Biontech/Pfizer will continue to vaccinate daily from 5 p.m. until September 4 in the course of the film festival. Daily 200 vaccinations would be possible there. Registration is still not necessary for this.
