There have been 22 new deaths reported related to Covid-19.
The Omicron wave keeps leading to new highs. Several times in the last few weeks, new infections have reached record levels and new daily records have been set. More than 43,000 new infections were reported on Thursday of the previous week, for example. Since then, the number of new cases has leveled off at a high level within 24 hours.
Within the last week, there have been more than 229,000 positive tests, bringing yesterday’s total to 339,722 active cases, a level of actively infected persons unprecedented before in the pandemic. This value was topped again from Friday to Saturday: currently, 343,333 people in Austria are actively infected with the coronavirus. With 2,027,604 infections, more than two million infections have been counted in this country since the beginning of the pandemic.
From Friday to Saturday, 32,258 new infections were reported in Austria. This is slightly below the average of 32,366 over the past seven days. By comparison, 34,748 cases were reported on Saturday of the previous week.
In the past 24 hours, 473,751 new PCR tests were performed. That translates to a positive rate of 6.81 percent. The seven-day incidence has dropped to 2,545.36.
There are also 22 new deaths associated with Covid 19 infections to report. Thus, the pandemic has claimed 14,214 lives in Austria so far.
There are currently 1,883 people in the hospital, 76 more patients than the previous day. 198 people are being cared for in intensive care units – one fewer than yesterday.
Vaccination
On the day the vaccination requirement came into effect, Burgenland had the highest vaccination coverage rate (valid vaccination certificate) at 75.3 percent. In Lower Austria, 71.2 percent of the population has valid vaccination protection, and in Styria, 70.4 percent. After Vienna (68.1), Tyrol (67.6), Carinthia (65.9), Salzburg (65.7), and Upper Austria (65), Vorarlberg brings up the rear with 64.8 percent.
On Friday, 33,120 vaccinations were carried out, of which 2,024 were first-time vaccinations, 6,124 were second-time vaccinations and 24,972 were third-time vaccinations. 6,180,987 people, or 69.2 percent of Austrians, have valid vaccination protection.
