As of 1 April, only five free PCR and five rapid antigen tests will be available to every Austrian every month. The regulation is still waiting; some questions are still open.
Five tests per month remain free
While the provinces are waiting for the Ministry of Health’s decree with concrete specifications, they see the areas responsible for controlling the limitation of PCR tests. In the future, most Laender will rely on the tried and tested throat tests (partly with pharmacy participation), in Styria only on tests in pharmacies.
The PCR regulation is to be rolled out as of 1 April, the health ministry said on Monday. The five free antigen tests announced in addition can only be collected in pharmacies from 9 April. The reason for this is the time limit after the Bundesrat decision on the antigen tests – the Bundesrat does not meet until 7 April.
There is no age limit for the PCR tests as with the antigen tests. The exact specifications for implementing the limitation of PCR tests to five per month and person will be regulated in a still-pending decree by Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens). This is expected by midnight on Thursday and should come into force on Friday.
