A significant benefit concert for Ukraine occurred at Vienna’s Heldenplatz. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen was also present.
Austria’s largest solidarity rally for Ukraine took place on Sunday at Vienna’s Heldenplatz. “YesWeCare – Children on the Run” is the motto of the mega-event at Vienna’s Heldenplatz. Cult cabaret artists Maschek, singer Ina Regen, Wanda and Conchita Wurst were present. According to “Puls24,” over 100,000 people came to the concert.
In addition to the concert performances, there was also a video message from Ukrainian President Volodimir Selenski directly from Kyiv at 6.40 pm.
A little later, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen appeared with his wife, Doris Schmidauer. “We are deeply touched that so many people have come here to show empathy. We can send a joint signal for peace and solidarity with Ukraine with this concert,” he stressed.
In his speech, Van der Bellen especially thought of all the children and young people who had to leave their homes. “This terrible war has changed everything – nothing is the same as before, outside the front door there is shooting, yesterday the children were still playing there. Bombs are falling on schools. Where yesterday there was safe home, suddenly there is war. No child should have to hold out in a bunker or flee or experience war,” Van der Bellen said.
He announced that Austria and Europe would help: “We are all glad that there is this great willingness to help, and this concert is also a sign of that; I thank them for their solidarity.“
He also thought of those speaking out against the war in Russia and risking prison sentences. “Our solidarity, our compassion is stronger than any aggression, freedom will prevail.”
