To know how many kilometers you can still drive with your car, you trust the fuel needle. But beware: this could play a nasty trick on you!
Many drivers can tell you a thing or two about this: Although you don’t expect it, you run out of gas in the middle of the road. And the fuel gauge wasn’t even down yet!
Never trust your fuel gauge.
Modern cars are full of innovative technology. But the tank’s fuel level control remains mostly simple and old-fashioned. The tank control is based on a float in the tank. But this only measures a wildly inaccurate value.
You may have a problem if you’re driving downhill on a long stretch of road and rely on your fuel gauge. Because of the incline, the float measurement can be wrong.
Too little fuel is harmful.
If the fuel level is low, you run the risk of coming to a standstill in the middle of the road, which is something no one needs. In addition, too little fuel in the tank can damage the engine.
Therefore, for your safety, head for the nearest gas station if your tank is only a quarter full! That way, you’re always on the safe side.
