From 2023, all plastic packaging such as yogurt pots, plastic bags, or tubes will be collected with plastic bottles and beverage cartons in yellow garbage can or bags throughout Austria. “This is an important step for climate protection and achieving the EU recycling targets,” said Altstoff Recycling Austria AG (ARA). The company expects this to result in a 20 percent increase in the collection of plastic packaging.
According to the report, ARA has been campaigning for years for a uniform collection of plastic packaging. “The collection was handled differently within the individual federal states,” said ARA board spokesman Harald Hauke. This led to uncertainty among many citizens about the correct waste separation,” he explained.
Starting signal on 1 January
That changes the packing regulation starting from the coming year: Starting from 1 January 2023, all plastic packing in the yellow ton or the yellow bag is collected. In 2025, the joint collection of plastic and metal packaging will be mandatory throughout Austria. The provinces of Carinthia, Lower Austria, Salzburg, and Vienna, as well as some districts in Upper Austria, are already implementing this step in 2023. The remaining provinces will continue to collect plastic and metal packaging separately in the next two years in the yellow garbage can, yellow bag, and blue garbage can.
