The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommends Biontech/Pfizer’s BA.4/5 vaccine for children five years and older.
The EMA made the announcement Friday in Amsterdam. The Corona vaccine, adapted for the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, had already been approved as a booster for people twelve and older. The EU Commission still has to approve the recommendation, which is considered a formality.
Recommendation of BA.4/5 vaccine for children over five
Experts expect broader protection against different Corona variants. Manufacturers pointed to studies showing strong immune responses against the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants in people over 18 30 days after vaccination. The adapted vaccine was considered tolerable and safe as the initial preparation.
