While the new Corona variant “Pirola” (BA.2.86) has only been detected at a meager percentage in Austria’s wastewater, the first three cases are now in Germany. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the infected persons come from different federal states.
The virus variant had been discovered in July, within a short time, in several countries on different continents. But this was not the only reason “Pirola” was under observation by the World Health Organization (WHO) from hour one, but mainly because of its evolutionary leap. With 34 mutations at the spike protein, the Corona variant is as different from Omicron as Omicron is from the original Wuhan variant, and here, as is well known, Delta lies in between.
Nevertheless, depending on the course and severity of the disease, the “Pirola symptoms” resemble the typical Corona symptoms. For example, patients in the United Kingdom in the “ZOE Health Study” app frequently reported headaches, fatigue, inflammation of the throat, coughing, hoarseness and sneezing, says the British newspaper ChronicleLive.

However, people infected have reported more uncommon symptoms of the disease:
In England, 10 of 48 cases required hospital treatment, according to the report. So far, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the government agency of the UK Department of Health, has not reported any deaths. Therefore, there is no evidence that people with the “Pirola” variant are more severely ill than those with other variants.
