Many providers are adjusting their tariffs to the consumer price index in April. Customers can expect to pay a few euros more per month.

Mobile phone and internet tariffs are not immune to the rise in prices. Starting April 1, mobile phone providers will increase their prices. Internet and mobile phone tariffs are set to rise by 7.8 percent. Existing customers will also be affected by the increase. As the comparison portal www.tarife.at informs, the value protection or index adjustment clauses allow providers to pass on inflation-related price increases to customers.
Last year, tariffs were increased by up to 8.6 percent, and tarife.at expects a price increase of around 7.8 percent this year, according to the consumer price index. This results in an average increase of EUR 21.24 per year for index-linked mobile phone tariffs and EUR 35.65 for internet.

Tariffs without value protection: switching is not always possible
47 percent of the mobile phone tariffs that can be concluded in Austria are index-linked with a monthly basic charge, and 87.23 per cent of internet tariffs are index-linked. Cancellation of the mobile phone contract is not easily possible due to the index clause. There is no special right to cancel in the event of price increases due to value adjustment or index clauses. Dipl.-Ing. Maximilian Schirmer, Managing Director of tarife.at, recommends that those affected compare prices and change their current tariff as soon as the commitment period allows.
