Brazil is currently experiencing the worst dengue outbreak in history. More than 4,000 people have died as a result.
Brazil is currently battling the worst dengue outbreak the country has ever had. According to the Ministry of Health, more than six million infections have been reported since the beginning of the year. The comparison makes it clear: the largest epidemic to date was in 2015, where “only” 1.6 million cases were counted in The entire year.
According to the figures, 4,019 deaths from the infection have already been confirmed. In the entire previous year, there were only 1,179. 2,837 more suspected cases are currently being investigated.
Due to the severe pain, the disease is often referred to as “bone-breaking disease”. A glimmer of hope: not every infected person falls ill with the virus, and the course of the disease is often mild. Although the number of cases has increased in the last five years, it has risen alarmingly since 2024.
According to the data, the disease peaked in March; more than 1.7 million people were infected. The figures have been falling since then. There were still 1.6 million cases in April, and in May, the number fell to 990,000.
The sudden outbreak appears to have been caused by the heavy rainfall and high temperatures in recent months. Under these weather conditions, the yellow fever mosquito, which transmits the dengue viruses, feels particularly at home and can thrive.
