Vorarlberg, Austria— The Filipino nursing community in Vorarlberg marked a significant milestone recently as they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their contributions to the region’s healthcare system. Five decades ago, Fr. Eugenio Daberto, a South Tyrolean priest who once served as a parish priest in Antique, Philippines, began a journey that would change the face of healthcare in Vorarlberg. Fr. Daberto facilitated the arrival of Filipino nurses and midwives, whose compassionate care quickly endeared them to employers and patients.
Numerous dignitaries attended the anniversary celebration, including Fr. Martina Rüscher, the federal councilor of Vorarlberg (Landesrätin), who served as the guest of honor. During her address, Rüscher lauded the achievements of Filipino nurses, recognizing their exceptional service over the last 50 years. She emphasized their crucial role in strengthening the healthcare system in Vorarlberg, bringing professional expertise, warmth, and dedication that patients cherish.
“Their journey is a testament to resilience, skill, and compassion,” Rüscher stated. “The people of Vorarlberg owe a deep debt of gratitude to the Filipino nurses and midwives who have enriched our healthcare with their unwavering commitment.”
The event commemorated past achievements and looked forward to continuing partnerships. Over the decades, the Filipino nursing community has grown, and its legacy has become an integral part of Vorarlberg’s healthcare history—one built on cultural exchange, respect, and an enduring commitment to caring for others.
