According to the latest data from Statistics Austria, 3.7 percent of the population in private households lives in so-called “absolute poverty.”

According to the EU definition, a further 1.529 million people – around 16.9 percent – are at risk of poverty or exclusion. Particularly affected: People with a low level of education. “Every tenth person with at most a compulsory school leaving certificate does not reach the EU minimum standard of living,” according to the Statistics Austria report.

Anyone who cannot afford at least seven of the 13 defined everyday needs is considered to be severely materially and socially disadvantaged. These include unexpected expenses of 1,390 euros, an annual vacation, or a sufficiently warm home.

In an EU comparison, this poverty has remained stable since the sharp increase in 2023 (201,000 to 336,000 people). In Austria, anyone below the threshold of 60 percent of the median income is also considered at risk of poverty – this currently affects around 1.288 million people with an annual net income of less than 19,926 euros (less than 1,661 euros per month).
