Education Minister Heinz Faßmann (ÖVP) on Friday evening held out the prospect of Corona vaccinations for school children as well. Speaking on ORF ZiB2, Faßmann said that the path to a reasonably virus-resistant school with vaccinations had been mapped out. By the next school year, he said, he wants to offer vaccination to all students 16 and older. And with the vaccination of the teachers one is almost through.

The education minister defended his announcement to bring graduating classes to school despite lockdowns in the East. He said that this was important because students should make use of every day at school, especially those in the Matura classes. To the objection of the union and principals that it is an impossible task for teachers to alternate between teaching in school and distance learning and also taking care of students in care, the minister said in the “Presse”: “Flexibility is needed here.” The schedule does not have to be rigidly adhered to, he said. Directors could, in order to provide more practicability, reallocate hours. They are “professionals in organizing school operations,” he said.

Despite his skepticism, Faßmann emphasized in ZiB2 that he supports distance learning because it is necessary to reduce the number of infections. At the same time, however, he also emphasized that he would like to see face-to-face teaching again as soon as possible, because he was “firmly convinced” that the school with its testing concept was also an instrument for combating the pandemic. In this context, the minister also announced that the intention was to switch to “more sensitive testing”.
