The “Free/Voluntary Covid 19 test” project has failed because of a blockade by the opposition. Too many questions were unanswered at the end, the review period for the amendment was too short and the corona infection figures are still too high. In the Austrian Parliament, the law on free testing could have been passed with votes from the ÖVP and Greens, but the SPÖ, FPÖ and Neos have a slim majority and could have blocked the law for up to eight weeks. The government therefore abandoned its plan – and…

Read MoreLockdown in Austria may last until January 24
The lockdown ending on January 18 is history. Exit restrictions and business shutdown remain in place. Those who did not want to be subject to the 24-hour curfew and other lockdown measures until January 24, 2021, inclusive, were supposed to be given the opportunity to “test free” from the lockdown starting January 18. This has now failed. The SPÖ, FPÖ and Neos refused to approve the planned law in the Bundesrat, thus bringing it to an end because it can no longer enter into force in time before January 18.…

This means that trade, gastronomy, tourism and probably also schools will not be able to open until January 24. Originally, it was planned that those who undergo testing would be able to take advantage of benefits a week earlier – such as visits to cultural and sporting events or the purchase of goods that…

Read MoreMass test registration possible from Monday
The second round of mass testing will start on January 15 and will include the possibility of “free testing”, which has been criticized by the opposition. The background to this is the government’s plan that the lockdown with the hard measures currently in force should expire on January 24 – but already on January 18 for all those who avail of the free testing. Registration and dates for the antigen tests in all provinces can be found on the online portal “Österreich Testet”. To the offer on the part of…
Read MoreCovid 19 Vaccination in Austria – timetable
The first Corona vaccinations in Austria and Europe already started shortly after Christmas, but the big vaccination offensive is only now starting little by little. 2021 will be the big vaccination year. Initially, only the vaccine from Biontech/Pfizer will be vaccinated. Unlike most other countries, Austria relied on AstraZeneca’s drug for much of its vaccine procurement. While this has the advantage of being significantly cheaper and not requiring such cold storage, it is unlikely to be licensed in the EU before February. The vaccination plan in Austria includes three phases.…
