According to the national health authority, France has already passed the peak of new infections in the current phase of the corona pandemic. “Although the indicators remain high, their observation suggests that the epidemiological peak of the second wave has been overcome,” the authority stated in a statement issued on Friday. Last week there was a 40 percent drop in positive tests.
Accordingly, fewer patients were admitted to hospitals and intensive care units. Prime Minister Jean Castex said on Friday that the current strategy was beginning to show results. However, he stressed that it was still important to stick to the rules in force. This is certainly not the time to let up.
This week, France had crossed the two million infected persons mark. However, it had also recently put more emphasis on corona tests. More than two million corona tests per week were last carried out in the country with its 67 million inhabitants. In addition, for some time now, people have had the option of taking rapid antigen tests in pharmacies without a prescription.
For about three weeks, strict exit restrictions have been in force in France. People are only allowed to go outside with a form and a good reason, retail and catering establishments are closed. The government had announced possible easing of the restrictions for early December. President Emmanuel Macron plans to make a speech next Tuesday.
