On Monday, the Vatican had announced the Pope’s plans for a trip to Iraq from March 5 to 8.

The travel announcement came as a surprise, because many observers had hardly expected a papal trip in 2021 due to the pandemic. In addition, the security situation in Iraq has so far prevented such a high-ranking visit.
