Vienna. Temperature records are tumbling, spring fever as far as the eye can see – so far, the year 2022 is shining with dream weather. “This is certainly special and not an annual occurrence,” reports Clemens Biermair from the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics. Also today, the temperatures remain high, especially in the east, values up to 15 degrees are expected.
Nevertheless by tomorrow at the latest, the sun will give way to precipitation, a powerful cold front will return to Austria. Already tonight it will hit the west, in Vorarlberg and Tyrol precipitation is predicted, the snow line will drop to 1,000 meters. From Lake Constance to Upper Austria, the wind also freshens up strongly.
In Carinthia, 50 to 70 cm of fresh snow beckon tomorrow.
On Wednesday, the cold front will spread to the rest of Austria: There will be precipitation throughout the country, the snow line will drop to 500 meters. The sun hardly shows, the temperatures do not get above 1 to 8 degrees. “From the southern side of the Alps to southern Burgenland around the main ridge of the Alps to Lower Austria and Vienna – it doesn’t stay dry anywhere,” Biermair reports. “The focus is on the south.” The most fresh snow is expected in Carinthia – where an Italian low will ensure deep wintry conditions tomorrow evening. “I expect 50 to 70 cm of fresh snow here,” Biermair said.
Thursday the weather settles down again, but the high temperatures of the first week of the year are gone. In the southeast, snow is still falling in the morning, in the Danube region and in the east, rain is mixed in with it at the lowest altitudes. “It will be more unstable and significantly colder than before – around 10 degrees,” says Biermair.
